You’ve been saving for months, and finally, you can afford your dream holiday package to Mauritius! Mauritius is situated in the heart of the Indian Ocean, known for its sandy beaches, coral reefs, and luxury resorts. But just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you have to miss out on any fun. Here are some tips on how to spend a week in Mauritius without breaking the bank.

Day 1: Arrival and exploring

After arriving in Mauritius, head to your hotel or resort to drop off your luggage. Then, it’s time to start exploring! Start by walking around the town or resort you’re staying in. Get a feel for the place and maybe do a little shopping. Head on down to the beach and take a dip in the ocean – you’re on holiday after all! Familiarize yourself with the local restaurants. Day 2: Hiking and nature

Mauritius is home to some stunning natural scenery, so get out there and explore it! There are plenty of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels all over the island. Explore Black River Gorges National Park, a nature lover’s paradise. With hiking trails, waterfalls, and plenty of opportunity for birdwatching, it’s easy to spend an entire day here without spending any money at all. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day hiking and taking in the scenery. Be sure to wear sunscreen and insect repellent, as there are plenty of mosquitoes in Mauritius. In the evening, relax with a good book or take a walk on the beach.

Day 3: Water sports

Mauritius is surrounded by water, so there are plenty of opportunities for fun water activities! Head to the nearest beach and try your hand at windsurfing, kitesurfing, or stand-up paddleboarding. Take a dip at Grand Baie Beach, which is one of the most popular beaches on the island, and it’s easy to see why. The sparkling water and soft sand make it the perfect place to relax and cool off on a hot day. Plus, it’s completely free to enjoy!

Day 4: Relaxation

After all that activity, today is a day for relaxation. Head to one of the many spas in Mauritius and treat yourself to a massage or facial. Or if you prefer something less expensive, spend the day lounging by the pool or reading on the beach. In the evening, go out for dinner and drinks — best enjoyed on an all-inclusive island package!

Day 5: Snorkelling or scuba diving

If you love being in the water, today is the day for you! Mauritius has some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in the world. There are many operators who offer both snorkelling and scuba diving trips—just be sure to do your research beforehand so you choose a reputable company. And don’t forget your sunscreen! In the evening, why not catch a movie at one of Mauritius’s many cinemas? Tickets are relatively cheap compared to prices in South Africa.

Day 6: Island tour

There are plenty of companies offering tours of Mauritius—both group tours and private tours. This is a great way to see some of Mauritius’s most famous landmarks such as Le Morne mountain or Chamarel Seven Colored Earths Park. A tour is also a great way to learn about Mauritian culture and history from a local guide. In the evening, enjoy dinner at your resort (generally included in your package), and then go in search of a delicious dessert at one of the many delightful restaurants Mauritius has to offer. End your last evening with a moonlit stroll on the beach.

Day 7: Departure

Today is your last day in Mauritius 🙁 But before you head back home, why not do some souvenir shopping? You can find everything from t-shirts to coconut keyrings at one of the many markets—just be sure to bargain! Or if you prefer something more unique, head to a Mauritius boutique selling local designer clothes and jewelry. Then it’s time to say goodbye to this beautiful island until next time!
