Travel to the United Arab Emirates

The UAE is renowned for its blend of modernity and tradition. Here, you can explore futuristic cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with their iconic skyscrapers and world-class shopping malls. But the UAE isn't just about luxury; it boasts natural wonders, like the sweeping dunes of the Arabian Desert.

Best time to visit the UAE?

The best time to visit the UAE is during the cooler months, from November to March. You can enjoy pleasant weather, making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

The UAE offers a plethora of activities to suit every taste. Enjoy world-class shopping, indulge in luxurious dining, or venture into the desert for an adrenaline-packed safari. For water enthusiasts, the pristine beaches offer an array of water sports.

Top Attractions in the UAE

  • Burj Khalifa: Soaring to the sky, it's the world's tallest building.
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: A stunning architectural marvel.
  • Desert Safari: Experience the thrill of dune bashing and Bedouin traditions.

Understanding the local culture and social norms is essential for a fulfilling experience in the UAE. Here's a glimpse of what to keep in mind during your visit:

  • Dress Code: The UAE follows conservative dress codes, especially in public places. When outside of beach resorts, it's advisable to dress modestly. Women should cover their shoulders, cleavage, and knees. Men are expected to wear long trousers and shirts.
  • Respect for Islam: The UAE is an Islamic country, and it's important to be respectful of Islamic customs. During the holy month of Ramadan, it's essential to abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking in public places during daylight hours. Also, avoid public displays of affection.
  • Greetings: Traditional Arabic greetings are common in the UAE. A common greeting is “As-Salaam-Alaikum” (Peace be upon you) to which you can respond with “Wa-Alaikum-Salaam” (And peace be upon you). Handshakes are common, but it's best to wait for a woman to extend her hand first.
  • Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals, especially women. Some areas, like military zones, are off-limits for photography.
  • Alcohol: While alcohol is available in the UAE, it's mainly limited to licensed bars and hotels. Public intoxication and drinking in the streets are strongly discouraged.
  • Friday is the Holy Day: Friday is the Islamic holy day, similar to Sunday in the West. Many businesses open later on Fridays, and mosques are busier.
  • Tipping: Tipping is appreciated, but not always expected. In restaurants, it's customary to leave a 10% tip if a service charge isn't included.
  • Haggling: When shopping in the UAE, especially in traditional markets or souks/souqs, haggling is common. Be polite, compare prices, and don't be afraid to walk away if the seller doesn't meet your price. It's a fun way to engage with the local culture and potentially save money.

By respecting the UAE's culture and social norms, you'll have a more enriching and harmonious experience during your visit. Embrace the local customs and make the most of your journey in this vibrant and diverse destination.

  • Visa Requirements: Most nationalities, including South Africans, can obtain a visa on arrival or through an online application.
  • Plug Type: Type G electrical plugs. Be sure to bring the right adapter.
  • Currency: UAE Dirham (AED). Cards are widely accepted, but it can be helpful to have some cash on hand when shopping in souks, or for smaller purchases.
  • Language: Arabic (official), but English is widely spoken.
  • Local Time: UAE Standard Time (GST), which is UTC+4 — this makes the UAE 2 hours ahead of South Africa.
