If you love nature, you’ll simply adore the Dominican Republic’s lush, tropical Samana peninsula. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Dominican Republic was the base from which the Spaniards explored the Caribbean and mainland America. Alleged to be the best place in the world to watch whales and one of the world’s most beautiful bays, Samana is a bit off the beaten track but is a wonderful eco-tourism destination, offering great opportunities to hike, dive, horseback ride and mountain bike.
Head for the El Salto del Limón, a 30m high waterfall and natural swimming pool; the Los Haïtises National Park with its limestone caves; Cayo Levantado, a nearby paradise island or one of the amazing beaches in the area. Or walk along the newly renovated Malecon promenade past the marina and stop at the Sunset Garden Café for a bite to eat.
