There’s something particularly unusual about an island that manages to effortlessly split itself down the middle geographically and culturally. Ruled in the north by the French, and in the south by the Dutch, St Martin or Sint Maarten is one of the smallest land masses divided between two countries.
In addition to the island’s beautiful beaches, shoppers will delight in an excursion to both the Dutch and French sides of the island, with over 500 duty-free shops on offer on the island. French wine and delicacy lovers will enjoy a duty-free shopping trip to Marigot, the capital, while Front Street in Philipsburg is a worthy equivalent on the Dutch side with jewellery, clothes, perfumes and souvenirs. Not keen on shopping? Why not head out on a kayak to explore the island’s saltwater lagoons, snorkel through Shipwreck Cove or explore the island’s colourful history and culture by bicycle.
Your cruise ship will in all likelihood dock in the Dutch capital, Philipsburg and it’s a short walk to the Front Street leading to the main shopping area.
