It may be tiny, but it certainly packs a punch. At only 51 sq km, St Thomas is one of the most popular stops on a Caribbean cruise itinerary offering passengers a day of shopping, sightseeing, dining, sailing or snorkeling. Your cruise ship will dock at the West Indian Company Dock, alongside Havensight Shopping Mall and a 3km walk to downtown Charlotte Amalie, the island’s capital named after the once queen of Denmark, a country whose influence can still be seen in the island’s architecture.
One of three islands comprising the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas was once a haven for pirates and was eventually bought by the United States in 1917 in a bid to protect its interests in the Panama Canal. Despite it’s American influences, it very much still has the spirit of a secluded Caribbean paradise. Spend the day at the island’s most popular beach, Magen’s Bay, a crescent-shaped bay with over a kilometre of white sand and several bars and small stores. Take the Skyride or climb the famous 99 steps of the capital, Charlotte Amalie, for astounding views of the Caribbean. If you’re keen to snorkel, pop off to Coki Beach promising underwater visibility of more than 30m and an ideal environment for children to learn how to snorkel.
