Best Time to Visit Mauritius

23 November 2023

A luminous island that promises escapism and breakaway fun, Mauritius is a year-round destination in which to discover Tropicana romance, barefoot luxury and castaway adventure.

With a mild climate and up to eight hours of sunshine every day, Mauritius only has two seasons. Summer (October to April) is hot, wet and humid with an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, and winter (May to September), is warm and dry with comfortable temperatures around the 20-degree Celsius mark.

While most travellers will agree that the best time to visit Mauritius is between May and October, there’s still something special in the tropical air at other times of the year; it all depends on your expectations.

November to January, and April to May: Beach Season!

Mauritius is almost entirely circled by powder-white beaches, azure lagoons, and coral reefs – the perfect destination for a sun-sand-and-sea holiday.

  • We recommend:
    • Flic-en-Flac on the west coast features soft sands, clear waters, and unforgettable sunsets.
    • The east coast’s Belle Mare Plage is the best spot to catch a magical Mauritius sunrise.
    • La Cuvette beach, surrounded by trees, is the perfect place to escape the crowds.

December to March: Best for diving and snorkelling

The marine life of Mauritius is considered to be among the most plentiful in the Indian Ocean. Diving and snorkelling off the island will give you the chance to discover more than four hundred sea creatures and two hundred species of coral – not to mention sponges and anemones!

  • We recommend:
    • Blue Bay Marine Park is ideal for amateur divers and features excellent visibility, medium depth, and the chance of spotting parrotfish, clownfish, and angelfish.
    • Flic-en-Flac is a top snorkelling spot, with warm and calm waters, soft sands, and diverse marine life.
    • To explore an idyllic underwater world filled with red sea breams, striped snappers, and others, head straight to Ile aux Cerfs.
    • As one of the most famous diving spots in Mauritius, the Cathedral features hollows and caves where you can encounter clownfish, gropers, and wrasse.

November to April: Best for deep sea fishing

With its bounty of marine life and mild weather conditions, Mauritius has the hook when it comes to deep sea fishing. Anglers can look forward to catching dorado, tuna, bonita, blue marlin and more.

  • We recommend:
    • The west coast for some of the best for deep-sea fishing opportunities.
    • The northern and eastern coasts for a less “crowded” experience, but no less satisfying angling.

April to October: Best for hiking

Mauritius is crisscrossed with hiking trails – each one leading somewhere beautiful. Stroll through forests, wade into rivers, or climb sightseeing peaks; hiking in Mauritius will leave you with extraordinary memories.

  • We recommend:
    • The Black River Gorges National Park for its diversity of flora and fauna and rare species of birds.
    • The hike to Tamarind Falls which gives you a chance to discover each of the seven waterfalls, one at a time, with plenty of clear blue waters in which to swim.

June to August: Best for surfing

The windier south and west coasts of Mauritius are ideal for surfers wanting to catch the perfect wave.

  • We recommend:
    • The beaches of Le Morne Peninsula – a reliable spot for both beginners and professionals.
    • Riviere des Galets, considered the wildest corner of Mauritius, is less crowded with dependably good waves.
    • Tamarina Bay, which is famous for its high swells, is a popular surfing destination.

July to November: Best for whale watching

You can find quite a few whales around Mauritius, including dense-beaked whales, southern beaked whales, dwarf sperm whales, and the famous sperm whale. Seeing whales up close, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Mauritius, is an unforgettable experience.
