The days are starting earlier, the sunshine is adding more light to our day, and the wildflowers are making their arrival. While it’s still too soon to say that Spring has sprung – whether you celebrate Spring on 1 September or 21 September is entirely up to you – the wildflowers are decorating our suburban greenbelts and pavements and letting us know that warmer days are on the way.
Many consider this the most beautiful time of the year, as the striking Namaqua flowers bloom, with many Capetonians taking road trips to see this annual natural flower show. If you’re considering a trip down to Cape Town during this time, this should be on your to-do list. While many locals keep their hidden gems private, we’re letting you in on the flower season’s best kept secrets – more so, where the best opportunities are for that picture-perfect scenery.
If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town, or just want to see some beautiful wildflowers, then make sure to time your trip during flower season. This is typically from late July to early September but can vary depending on the year. The Cape West Coast is iconic for endless views of these beautiful blooms, where untouched fields of wildflowers pop up for their annual sunny showdown. This area has a unique climate that is perfect for wildflowers. So, if you’re looking for a breathtaking flower display, be sure to head up west!
One of the best places to see the flowers is at Namaqua National Park. This reserve is home to over 3,000 different plant species, and during the flower season, it bursts into a sea of colour.
If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, then you should check out the Postberg Flower Reserve. This reserve is much smaller than the Namaqua National Park, but it’s still incredibly beautiful, and will see less visitors during the season.
For those wanting to fully immerse themselves in nature, there are many hiking trails along the West Coast, from the Grotto Bay Trail between Koeberg Private Nature Reserve and Yzerfontein that’s perfect for spotting birdlife and the iconic flowers, to the Bakoor Trail in the West Coast National Park that’s ideal for beginner hikers or the Cape Columbine Tietiesbaai to Lighthouse Trail in Paternoster for a chance at seeing marine life at its best.
We recommend that your adventure should include some stops at the farm stalls along the roadside to try authentic roosterkoek, as well as at some truly iconic West Coast restaurants that line the beaches in towns like Langebaan, Paternoster, and Saldana. For the brave and bold, take a dip in the Langebaan lagoon should the weather allow. Along the way, you’ll find many places for perfect Insta-worthy backdrops.
No matter where you go, you’re sure to have a wonderful time during the west coast flower season. So don’t wait, start planning your Cape Town holiday package today! And if it’s just local flights you’re after browse all our deals on our flights to Cape Town page.
