Family Travel Made Easy: Tips for Flying with Kids

17 July 2024

Travelling with kids can be a daunting experience, especially if the thought of flying with them makes you break out in a cold sweat. Fear not! With a bit of preparation and the right tips, your family holiday can be stress-free and enjoyable. At Pentravel, we know what it is to be a parent or guardian flying with young children, so we’ve pulled together everything you need to know, from preparing your child for the flight to ensuring their comfort and safety on board.

Preparing Your Child for Flying

Discuss the Flight Ahead of Time

One of the best ways to prepare your child for flying is to talk about it ahead of time. Explain what they can expect, from going through security to the plane taking off and landing. Use positive language and describe the experience as an adventure. This can help alleviate any anxiety they may have.

Read Books About Flying

There are plenty of children’s books about flying that can help your child understand what to expect. Reading these books together can make the concept of flying more familiar and less intimidating.

Role-Play the Airport Experience

Kids love role-playing. Set up a mini airport at home and take turns being the security officer, the passenger, and the flight attendant. Go through the steps of checking in, going through security, and boarding the plane. This can make the actual experience less overwhelming.

Important Information for Kids Flying

Document Requirements

Before you head to the airport, make sure you have all the necessary documents for your child. For domestic flights within South Africa, make sure you have a copy of their birth certificate if you are asked for it at check in. Your Pentravel consultant will be able to give you specific information about international flights and airlines.

Inform Your Airline

When booking your flights, your Pentravel consultant is able to inform the airline that you will be travelling with children. Many airlines provide special services for families, such as priority boarding and assistance at the airport. Make sure to request these services in advance.

Request Kids’ Meals

Most airlines offer special meals for children. These meals are often more suited to young palates and can keep your little ones happy during the flight. Be sure to request kids’ meals when you book your tickets if that is an option. If your child has any allergies or dietary restrictions, inform the airline ahead of time. Many airlines can accommodate special dietary needs with advance notice.

Protecting Your Baby’s Ears During Flight

Babies’ ears are more sensitive to changes in air pressure, which can cause discomfort during take-off and landing. This is due to the Eustachian tube, which helps regulate pressure in the middle ear, being narrower and less efficient in babies.

Feeding your baby during take-off and landing can help alleviate ear pain. The swallowing motion helps equalize the pressure in their ears. Whether it’s breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or giving them a dummy, the sucking action can provide relief.

There are special earplugs and earmuffs designed for babies that can help reduce the pressure changes. These can be particularly useful if your baby is prone to ear infections or has sensitive ears.

Keeping Your Child Calm on the Plane

Bring Comfort Items

Pack your child’s favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or any other comfort item that helps them feel secure. Familiar objects can provide comfort and reassurance during the flight. Treat night-times like you would at home, have a time for bed and settle them with a story or anything else that will comfort them and send them to sleep.

Pack Snacks and Entertainment

Make sure to pack plenty of snacks and entertainment for the flight. Healthy snacks can keep your child satisfied and prevent meltdowns. Avoid sugar where possible! Tablets, colouring books, and small toys can keep them entertained and occupied. Adding a few ‘new’ small toys wrapped up and handing them out every hour or so will also go a long way. Older children will enjoy a favourite book, e-reader, card games or the movies on offer.

Encourage Movement

If the flight is long, encourage your child to move around the cabin (when safe to do so). Stretching their legs and changing position can help prevent restlessness and discomfort. Going for a ‘walk’ to the bathroom helps with a quick change of scenery.

Additional Tips for Flying with Kids

Pack a Carry-on Bag

Pack a carry-on bag with essentials for the flight, including snacks, entertainment, and any necessary medications. Having everything you need within reach can make the flight more comfortable for you and your child.

Stay Hydrated

Flying can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water during the flight. Bring a refillable water bottle and fill it up after passing through security.

Be Patient and Flexible

Travelling with kids can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be patient and flexible. Allow extra time for everything, and try to remain calm and positive, even if things don’t go as planned.
