Here’s Why We Love the Mediterranean

05 December 2023

With 23 countries sharing the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea and thousands of kilometres of beaches and cliffs, the Med is home to some of the most breathtakingly beautiful spots you will ever see in your lifetime.

Turquoise seas, culture trips and history; this is why we love the Mediterranean (and why you should too!).

Here’s Why We Love the Mediterranean

The French Riviera

This corner of the Med is all about the glamour. With towns and cities from the likes of Cannes and Saint-Tropez to Monaco, the Riviera is a bucket-list Mediterranean destination. The sea is eye-popping blue, the quaint French towns are full of history, and the seaside bars sprinkled with celebs.

The Cinque Terre

A world heritage site featuring five unique and beautiful towns, some of which are only accessible by boat or foot, the Cinque Terre is a truly magical Mediterranean destination. Spend your time ambling through picturesque towns, savouring the local Ligurian cuisine, and people-watching from a laidback seaside café.

Here’s Why We Love the Mediterranean

Barcelona

Barcelona combines a little bit of everything in one exciting city. It’s sunny and relaxed, the food is incredible (tapas for the win), it’s packed with culture, bursting at the seams with art and design, and the Gaudi architecture is out of this world. Need more? Barcelona’s sandy and long beaches are lined with Chiringuitos – small bars serving oceanside drinks and tapas.

Greece

While technically on the Aegean Sea, Greece is a not-to-be-missed destination on a Med trip. The island of Santorini especially is a must-see. This cliff-edged island in the Cyclades group of the Greek islands is famous for dramatic views, stunning sunsets from Oia town, its characteristic white houses and its laidback (yet glam) island atmosphere.

Here’s Why We Love the Mediterranean

Majorca

Known as the quieter Balearic island to its feisty older sister Ibiza, Majorca has plenty of Mediterranean charm: chic shops, shaded plazas and quirky little old town bars. But there’s more. Explore the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, visit a winery, or dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Dubrovnik

Technically on the Adriatic Sea, the charming Croatian city (and UNESCO World Heritage site) of Dubrovnik is a culture trip second to none – and a must-see addition to a Mediterranean holiday. Marvel at historic architecture from a cable car, relax on a beach, experience the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, or, in winter, the feast of St. Blaise. Don’t miss this bewitching coastal city.

To get the full measure of the Med, our experts recommend a Mediterranean Cruise. Need more inspiration? Check out our favourite port stops on a Mediterranean cruise and add Venice, Mykonos and Florence to your wanderlust wish list!
