Here are some of our favourite hikes on the island:

  • The Black River Gorges National Park – This is one of the most popular hiking spots on the island and it’s easy to see why. The national park is full of lush vegetation, waterfalls and stunning views. There are a few different trails you can take, depending on how long you want to hike for and how challenging you want it to be.
  • Le Morne Brabant – This mountain is located in the southwest of Mauritius and offers unbelievable views from the summit. It’s a strenuous hike so make sure you’re feeling fit before embarking on this one!
  • Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths – These sand dunes get their vibrant colours from the minerals that are found in the soil. The hike up to the dunes is relatively easy but it can be quite hot so make sure to bring plenty of water.
  • Tamarin Falls – These beautiful waterfalls are situated in Tamarin village in the southwest of Mauritius. The hike to the falls takes around 45 minutes and is suitable for all fitness levels.

What to Expect When Hiking in Mauritius

One of the great things about hiking in Mauritius is that there are trails suitable for all fitness levels, so anyone can enjoy them. However, there are a few things you should be aware of before setting off on your hike:

  • It can be very hot – even if you’re used to hiking in warm climates, the heat in Mauritius can be intense so make sure you drink plenty of water and take regular breaks in the shade.
  • There are mosquitoes – due to the humid climate, there are mosquitoes on some of the trails so make sure you have insect repellent with you.
  • Watch out for snakes – there are a few species of snake in Mauritius but they’re mostly harmless. However, it’s always best to be cautious so if you see one, just give it a wide berth!
