The Maldives are on most people’s bucket lists, and are a favourite among honeymooners, families and of course beach and water enthusiasts! With well over 100 resorts to choose from, where do you begin to search for your ideal Maldives Resort. Most resorts lie on their own private island where swaying palms fringe coral lagoons and pale blue waters lap the sands…. so how do you choose between them? This little guide to choosing the best resort in the Maldives, should help narrow down your options.

All in? Try and choose an all-inclusive resort. Although you might find more cost-effective options offering Half board (breakfast & dinner daily), you normally do end up paying in more overall. Remember you are on 1 island for the week, so there aren’t a variety of shops and local restaurants as alternatives. Resort prices are often also is euros or USD (US Dollar). An all-inclusive package, including all meals & local drinks is definitely the recommended optionand also easier when budgeting for your dream break. Make sure you check out the nitty gritty of what’s included in the resorts all-inclusive package, as some offer only certain drinks over certain mealtimes.

Do you need entertaining? Whether you are travelling with your kids in toe or not, some of us don’t enjoy just lazing on the beach with a cocktail in hand. Check out those resort amenities. Kids clubs are a definite must for families, you won’t be able to get your kids back! Whether you are looking for in house entertainment or wanting to check out what water sports are available, there is an abundance of activities to keep you entertained during your stay. Some resorts even offer a flying trapeze course! If you are looking for some barefoot luxury with very little to do, there are also plenty of resorts out there for you. Did somebody say scuba? If you are looking to scuba, this is the place. The Maldives is any divers dream, with an abundance of spectacular coral reefs and marine life. Choose a resort that offers a house reef, which means you won’t need to travel far and can make the most of your time in the water. The North Atoll has 3 shipwrecks you can explore! If scuba isn’t your thing, you will need to try your hand at snorkeling! The Maldives is the perfect place to snorkel through the reef and right from the privacy of your own beach or even villa!

To water villa or not? I think most of us dream about staying in a water villa when dreaming of the Maldives. If that is the case, just make sure you budget accordingly. Most resorts will offer their lead in rooms, which will be garden or beach facing, then lead up to their water villas as their top-level rooms. If you do decide to make that dream of your water villa stay come true, make sure you check how private the water villas are. Some resorts have executed the design perfectly, allowing you the privacy you would want when lazing on your private deck, whereas unfortunately some resorts have failed to take notice of such a crucial factor. BUT the dream is real, and those idyllic pictures of glass bottomed bathrooms and private splash pools are real! We suggest you have the best of both worlds and book yourself into a beach bungalow/suite for your first few nights and then finish off by a few nights in a water villa.

Do I have to be a millionaire? Maldives package pricing has come down over the years, and packages are now similarly priced as most all-inclusive Mauritian resorts. Try and budget between R20-R25k per person for a 7-night 4-star resort package including flights, airport taxes. accommodation in entry level rooms, water sea plane or speedboat transfers, selected meals & drinks. There is a selection of resorts that also offer children to share with 2 adults for free on the same meal basis. The number of children and age of the children will depend on the applicable resort.
