July Safari Goals: Big 5 Legends and Little 5 Surprises

23 July 2025

July is prime time for a bush getaway in South Africa. The winter months bring cooler mornings, dry conditions, and excellent wildlife sightings – especially in the early mornings and just before sunset. Most travellers head into the bush in search of the legendary Big 5, but if you’re looking for something different (and fun to brag about), try spotting the quirky Little 5 too.

Whether you’re planning a Kruger safari holiday with your crew, a couples’ retreat, or even flying solo to recharge in nature, here’s your go-to guide on what to look out for, where to go, and how to plan smart – especially if you’re thinking about affordable African safari options.

So, what’s the difference between the Big 5 and the Little 5?

The Big 5 were originally named for how difficult they were to hunt on foot – but these days, they’re all about top-tier wildlife viewing.

South Africa’s Big 5 are:

  • Lion
  • Leopard
  • Elephant
  • Rhino
  • Buffalo

They’re on most safari wish lists for a reason. These animals are powerful, elusive, and unforgettable to see in the wild.

Now, for a fun twist – the Little 5 are named after their larger namesakes but are way smaller and more low-key. They’re a challenge to spot, but that’s part of the fun.

They are:

  • Elephant shrew (a tiny insect-eating mammal with a long snout)
  • Buffalo weaver (a chatty little bird with messy communal nests)
  • Leopard tortoise (with spotted shell patterns)
  • Ant lion (the larva of a flying insect that traps ants in the sand)
  • Rhino beetle (a tough little bug with horn-like projections)
  • Spotting all five on your trip? Major bragging rights unlocked.

Where to see them in South Africa

If the Big 5 are your goal, Kruger National Park is a top pick. It’s easy to access, full of great lodge options, and the guides know exactly where to find the action. Entering through Paul Kruger Gate gives you a head start on morning drives and plenty of places to stay to match your taste and budget.

You’ll also have luck in the Sabi Sands, Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park, or the malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park – ideal for family bush getaways.

The Little 5 are found in many of the same areas but spotting them takes a bit more patience. Look out for Buffalo weavers in trees, leopard tortoises near waterholes, and ask your guide to help track the trickier ones like the elephant shrew and ant lion.

Can you do a safari on a budget?

Absolutely. Whether you’re planning a quick bush escape with friends, a romantic getaway, or one of those memorable family bush breaks, there are ways to make it work without overspending. From self-drive safaris to all-inclusive lodge stays, the options are flexible – and your budget should be too.

The best part? You don’t need to figure it out alone. Chat with us at Pentravel and we’ll help tailor a package that suits your travel style and your budget. Whether you want something simple or a little more luxe, we’ve got your back.

Things to do on safari (besides game drives)

Safari life isn’t all about driving around in search of lions – there’s a whole world of bush experiences to try:

  • Guided bush walks: Great for spotting the Little 5 and learning about plants, insects, and tracks.
  • Night drives: Spot hyenas, bush babies, and other nocturnal animals.
  • Birdwatching: South Africa has over 800 species. Add a few to your life list!
  • Photographic safaris: Some lodges offer guided photography tours with expert tips.
  • Sundowners in the bush: There’s just something special about a G&T at sunset, surrounded by nature.
  • Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the Milky Way puts on a serious show.

Top tips for your July safari

  • Pack for layers. Mornings are cold, but midday warms up quickly. Think hoodies, beanies, and zip-off pants.
  • Bring binoculars. Especially handy for spotting birds and those sneaky Little 5.
  • Stay hydrated. Dry air and bush drives can leave you feeling dehydrated fast.
  • Don’t rush. Wildlife doesn’t run on a schedule – take your time, enjoy the process, and trust your guide.
  • Wake up early. The best sightings usually happen at dawn when the bush is buzzing with activity.

Why July is the perfect time for a bush break

Cooler weather = more active animals, fewer bugs, and clearer visibility through the dry bush. If you’re looking for peak safari conditions, July is it. Whether you’re ticking off your bucket list or just craving fresh air and open spaces, this is the ideal season to go wild.

Ready? Let’s go!

Big 5, Little 5 – why not both? From exciting game drives to spotting the tiniest ant lion in the sand, July is your chance to experience the wild side of South Africa.
