Planning a destination wedding can seem daunting, but with a bit of help, it’s easier than you think! We caught up with our expert travel agents, Mel Tester and Amy de Beer, both of whom not only planned but celebrated their weddings in Mauritius. They’ve got the inside scoop to help you plan your perfect day on this stunning island.
Mel: First things first – choose a travel agent you trust. They’re your go-to person for managing all the details, especially for your guests. Think about the time of year, your budget, and what will work best for everyone. If you want your loved ones there, pick a venue that’s budget-friendly for your guests, too.
Amy: Start by picking your dream destination, then chat with your travel agent to explore your options. Once that’s sorted, stay organised. Make a list of must-bring items – you might not be able to find everything you need at your destination.
Mel: Ideally, get the ball rolling about a year in advance. Your guests will appreciate the extra time to save and plan.
Amy: As soon as possible! Flights open up around 10 months ahead, and booking early means better prices and availability.
Mel: Mauritius is a fantastic choice! It’s close, stress-free, and the best part? You’ll have a co-ordinator to handle all the nitty-gritty details.
Amy: Absolutely! It’s a quick 4-hour flight from South Africa, and many hotels offer great wedding packages. If you’re dreaming of a sunset beach wedding, Mauritius is where you want to be.
Mel: Costs can vary depending on the package and the hotel you choose. Most of the weddings I organise are at beautiful 4-star hotels that offer great value for guests like a 25% discount on the land portion. Couples often go for vow renewals or small ceremonies and might splurge on extras like a private reception or special activities.
Amy: It depends on how much you want to customise your wedding. Packages cover the basics, but extras like a videographer or unique décor can add to the cost.
Mel: Aim to send them out about a year in advance, but 9 to 12 months is also good.
Amy: The earlier, the better. Your guests will need time to plan, so send out invitations as soon as you’ve nailed down the details and costs.
Amy: Most packages include flights, accommodation, meals or drinks, the wedding venue, a co-ordinator, and basic décor. Extras like flower arches, special dinners, or a photographer are usually additional.
Mel: There’s no set rule. Most guests stay for 6 – 7 nights, but some might come for just 2 – 3 nights. What matters most is that everyone is there for the big day.
Amy: It’s up to you! Most hotels like the couple to arrive at least two days before the wedding to finalise details. The ceremony itself is usually short and sweet, around 30 minutes, followed by the reception.
Mel: Generally, guests cover their own travel costs, and the couple might cover any upgrades or additional activities.
Amy: It varies. Some couples pay for accommodation, while guests cover their flights. Some hotel groups even offer discounts for wedding guests.
Mel: Book your wedding date as early as possible – Beachcomber resorts only allow one wedding per day. If you want a legal wedding in Mauritius, make sure to get your birth certificates within 3 months of travel. For vow renewals, just bring your marriage certificate from South Africa.
Amy: It’s easier to get legally married in your home country and then have a symbolic ceremony in Mauritius. Don’t forget to bring your marriage certificate to show that you’re already married.
Mel: Go as personalised as you like! Bring your own décor or hire locally. For my wedding, I planned fun activities like island tours and beach dinners for my guests – those little extras make it special.
Amy: Small, personal touches like customised décor can make your day truly unique. Your co-ordinator will be your go-to for adding those perfect details.
