Pentravel’s Cape Sales Manager Desi shares her thoughts on travelling to Namibia – one of her favourite places in the world!
Namibia…the country (according to me) that delivers it all! Millions of tourists flock to Namibia each year due to the must-see-and-do Bucket List experiences – of which there plenty! Namibia is a country of diversity, offering something for nature lovers, history fanatics, and the ‘camper’, as well as offering the most luxurious experiences in the middle of nowhere locations, and of course their absolute genuine hospitality.

But it really doesn’t matter for what reason you are travelling to Namibia; the best tip I can give you would be to travel by road. Self-drive in Namibia is super easy, the roads are in great condition, even the gravel roads. The journey and experience along the way from point A to B is part of the holiday and I definitely recommend!
There are so many hidden gems along the road, setting aside an extra hour a day for travelling time is essential to make sure you reach your destination before dark but also more important you have not missed an experience en route.
Fish River Canyon would be first on my list, the third-longest canyon in the world. If you are a walking enthusiast, you will enjoy the trail adventures which are usually between three to five days long.

Further north along the coast, you have Luderitz, a German settler’s town which boomed after diamonds were discovered in the Namib Desert and soon became a mining town. Kolmanskop is 10km from Luderitz and is also worth visiting; today known as the Ghost Town; as the buildings have been swept under sand after the settlers left behind everything to follow the diamond trail.
Now for the spectacular beauty of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei – a salt and clay pan surrounded by the beauty of colossal red dunes. The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world, meeting another two lovely coastal towns – Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

The desert is not only an attraction for those who are in awe of the beauty and the surprising variety of wildlife but there is also so much on offer for the adrenalin junkie! From skydiving, 4×4 trails, quad biking, camel rides and quad-biking, there’s something for every adventurer.
Swakopmund is a beautiful German town, rich in culture and home to the best eisbein, bratkartofelen and sauerkraut I have ever tasted – as close as you will get to being in Germany itself.

Travelling further north you’ll reach the districts known as Damaraland and Koakoland – both rich in history and beautiful landscapes. Until this day you will also find the local traditions being practiced and lived in each of their respected districts.

Then finally, there is Etosha National Park, definitely a must-see for all nature and animal lovers – here the hours and days go by, as you spend time driving from one watering hole to the next in search of the elephants, lion, cheetah, rhino and more. Etosha also consists of a huge salt pan which offers a unique perspective for photographers especially.
