Itinerary

Day 1: Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and one of its 47 prefectures. It is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo is a huge metropolis spanning the city, mountains to the west and subtropical islands to the south. It is made up of central Tokyo, Old Tokyo, 23 central special wards, 26 more cities, five towns and eight villages. The metropolis blends high-tech industries, many exciting tourist attractions and cultural heritage sights that have been preserved in a variety of forms including beautiful temples, nature reserves, and parks. On the agenda of most visitors are the temples of Asakusa, the gardens of the Imperial Palace (in Chiyoda) and the Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, in Harajuku). There are many unique areas to visit such as as dazzling Shinjuku, youthful Shibuya and upmarket Ginza. Akihabara, Tokyo's Electric Town, is now also the unquestioned center of its otaku community, and the stores along Chuo-dori are packed to the rafters with anime (animation) and manga (comics). Another popular district for all things manga/anime is the Nakano ward and its Broadway Shopping arkade.

Day 2: Mount Fuji (Shimizu), Japan

Shimizu is a town located in Suntō District, Shizuoka, Japan. Shimizu is located at the northern end of Izu Peninsula. In 2005, Shimizu was absorbed by the neighboring city of Shizuoka.The Kakita River flows through the town. The Port of Shimizu is famous for its Japanese mandarin oranges, and there are many green tea farms in the mountains surrounding the city. The port is the country’s leading tuna landing fishing port. The Port of Shimizu is located in a beautiful area with many opportunities for travelers. Within the city is the S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a modern complex that contains Japan’s first sushi museum, Chibimaruko-chan Land, and the Shimizu Soccer Museum. Miho no Matsubara is the peninsula stretching into Matsubara Bay. With wonderful green pine trees, white waves on a crystal blue sea, and great views of Mount Fuji in the background. The Port of Shimizu is just 37 kilometers southeast of the famous Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain and a sacred site. This dormant volcano last erupted in 1708. You can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji from the very popular Hakone resort.

Day 3: Nagoya, Japan

Nagoya is the third-largest incorporated city and the fourth most populous urban area in Japan. Located on the Pacific coast in the Chubu region on central Honshū, it is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and is one of Japan's major ports. Nagoya's two most famous sightseeing spots are Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine. Nagoya Castle was built in 1612. Although a large part of it burned down in the fires of World War II, the castle was restored in 1959, adding some modern amenities such as elevators. The castle is very famous for two magnificent Golden Orca on the roof, often used as the symbol of Nagoya. Atsuta Shrine is known as the second-most venerable shrine in Japan, after Ise Shrine. It is said to enshrine the Kusanagi sword, one of the three imperial regalia of Japan, but it is not on display to the public. It holds around 70 festivals in a year, and many people visit the shrine year-round. Also, the shrine has over 4,400 national treasures representing its 2,000 year history. It is currently (2009) undergoing restoration.

Day 4: Kyoto (Osaka), Japan

Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshū, Japan. Kyoto is located in a valley, part of the Yamashiro (or Kyoto) Basin, in the eastern part of the mountainous region known as the Tamba highlands. It is a large city with a number of districts; Central, Arashiyama (Western Kyoto), Higashiyama (eastern Kyoto), North and South districts. Kyoto offers an incredible number of attractions for tourists. With its 2000 religious places- 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and architecture intact, it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan. Among the most famous temples in Japan are Kiyomizu-dera, a magnificent wooden temple supported by pillars off the slope of a mountain; Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion; Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion; and Ryōan-ji, famous for its rock garden.

Day 6: Naha (Okinawa), Japan

Naha is the capital city of the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa. It is a coastal city located on the East China Sea coast of the southern part of Okinawa Island, the largest of the Ryukyu Islands. There are tourist resources around Naha Port such as Shuri Castle, the royal residence during the Ryukyu Kingdom period, and the Fukushuen Chinese garden honoring cultural exchanges with China. Other attractions are Kokusai Street, for great shopping, and Naha-Shintoshin where a big shopping mall is being constructed.

Day 8: Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Kaohsiung is a city located in southwestern Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait on the west. It is Taiwan’s second largest city and its largest port. The city is often known as Taiwan's "Harbor Capital" because of its close connection and heavy reliance on the ocean and maritime transportation. The city also has high concentrations of heavy industry, including steel production, shipbuilding, and other exports. A major attraction in Kaohsiung is the Chijin district, which is located on a slender island on the western side of Kaohsiung which serves as a natural breakwater for the harbor. The district is filled with seafood restaurants selling freshly caught seafood.

Day 9: Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong is a city-state situated on China's south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, it is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. It is a major tourist destination as well as being one of the world's major business centres. It is also a bustling port and commercial centre with many luxury hotels and a highly developed transport system. Places worth visiting include Tsimshatsui complex – shops, restaurants and a space museum, the harbour and its magnificent skyline, The Peak – take a tram to the 'top' of Hong Kong Island for exceptional views and the Peak Tower, night markets, Ocean Park, with performing dolphins and killer whales, the floating restaurants, Repulse Bay, with the Tin Hau Temple overlooking the beach, Stanley Market, the New Territories countryside, the Chinese markets; Miu Fat Monastery, Chinese temples, Aberdeen, Lantau Island and the splendid Po Lin Monastery. There are delightful beaches on the islands of Lantau, Lamma and Cheung Chau.

Day 12: Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei is the provisional capital of the Republic of China, otherwise known as Taiwan. It is located in the northern part of the island in a basin between the Yangming Mountains and the Central Mountains. Taipei is the centre of Taiwan's commerce, government and culture. It is a very busy and expensive city, packed with people, cars and covered in Smog. However there are some great sights and excellent food. Taipei offers a mix of the modern and traditional with temples dating back to dynastic times and sky scrapers and neon lit streets of a more modern era. Taipei has dozens of world-class restaurants where you can sample the best regional Chinese cuisine; and there are plenty of night markets serving up scrumptious evening snacks in a exciting and fun environment. Just a few minutes from the heart of the city you can soak away the cares of the world in mineral-rich hot springs nestled in the lush mountain foothills ringing the TaipeiBasin. And throughout the city there are plenty of trails, parks and other oases of tranquility to lift and invigorate your spirits.
