Itinerary

Day 1: Reykjavik, Iceland

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, directly east of Greenland, Iceland is Europe's westernmost country and the second largest island in the North-Atlantic ocean. Its capital, Reykjavik holds practically half of Iceland’s entire population, perhaps not surprising considering how little of the country is actually habitable. As such it is the country’s unrivalled cultural and economic centre surrounded by a vast wilderness of mountains and glaciers. The city’s highlights are mostly found in central Reykjavik: lining Old Town and Lake Tjornin are attractive tin houses, some of the more historical buildings, and many of its restaurants and nighttime hotspots. Its nightlife is legendary, with all-night street parties in summer and a huge club scene year-round. The nearby surrounding wilderness offers walking trails at Videy Island or the lava area at Heidmork, is definitely worth a visit. At "Smoky Bay" you can see geothermal steam rising from the ground. Harnessed to heat the city, these smoke signals can be seen along with any number of natural wonders, half an hour out of town.

Day 2: Djupivogur, Iceland

Djúpivogur is a small town and municipality (Djúpavogshreppur) located on a peninsula in eastern Iceland, near the island of Papey and on the fjord Berufjörður. Overlooked by Mt Bulandstindur, its rocks are amongst the oldest in Iceland, formed from the extinct Breiddalur volcano. Djúpivogur offers visitors breathtaking mountains, wildlife, valleys and beaches. The area has diverse birdlife, great for bird watching and hiking.

Day 3: Akureyri, Iceland

Akureyri is a town in northern Iceland. It is Iceland's second largest urban area and fourth largest municipality. Nicknamed the Capital of North Iceland, Akureyri is an important port and fishing centre. The town is located at the end of a long fjord known as Pollurinn and is surrounded by high mountains. Akureyri is a very picturesque town with its location by a scenic fjord, eclectic building styles and streets winding their way through gorges. Visitors can walk around the town centre, see the impressive church and check out Listagilið (literally: "the art canyon"), home to a number of arts and crafts galleries and shops. The tranquil municipal botanical garden, Lystigarðurinn, is worth visiting, as are the several small museums dotted around town.

Day 4: Isafjordur, Iceland

As the primary urban center in the isolated Westfjords region of Iceland, Ísafjörður draws outdoor enthusiasts like a magnet. With its captivating fjord, perfect for water sports, and its mountainous terrain offering abundant opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more, there's something here for everyone. Originally established as a church site and later developing into a bustling 16th-century trading post, Ísafjörður now hosts fascinating museums and historic landmarks, inviting visitors to delve into the region's vibrant heritage and local culture.

It is a beautiful colonial town which boasts quaint squares, Greenland’s oldest fountain and a sculpture park, called “Stone and Man”, where art is carved into the rock. The Qaqortoq Museum offers services in English, Danish, and Kalaallisut. The Great Greenland Furhouse is also a popular tourist attraction. Tourists are offered year-round activities such as kayaking, guided hiking, whale-watching, cross-country skiing, and boating

Day 7: Paamiut (Frederikshab), Greenland

The town of Paamiut is located at the mouth of the Kuannersooq Fjord in southwestern Greenland. The town was built in 1742, however to all appearances, the area has been inhabited since around 1,500 BC. Visitors can see the very characteristic wooden church which dates from 1909. In the local museum located at the town center, are archaeological finds from around the area. It is based on a former carpentry workshop and a salt house. In late summer and autumn whale watchers will usually see rorquals, fin whales, killer whales or humpbacks.

Day 8: Nuuk, Greenland

Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland. It is located at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. It is the least populated capital in the world, but a bustling city by Greenlandic standards. Attractions in the town include the Katuaq culture centre, the Cathedral, the National Museum and the Nuuk Art Museum. Whale watching is a popular activity in Nuuk.
