Itinerary

Day 1: Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Rome is one of the most popular cities in the world and is a history lesson in itself. Key sites include the Vatican City, The Forum, the Colosseum and the ruins of the Circus Maximus. There are many museums and art galleries, with works by Raphael, Bottecelli, Pinturicchio and Belini and many more. The Vatican City has many spectacular buildings and churches to visit principle amongst which is the Sistine Chapel with its Michelangelo ceiling. It is the world's smallest independent sovereign state and also features St. Peter's Basilica was built over 1,500 years ago the Vatican Library hand the Vatican Garden. Modern Rome is a city of restaurants, open piazza's, wonderful shopping and more.

Day 2: Messina (Taormina), Italy

Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, Italy and the capital of the province of Messina. It is located near the North-East corner of Sicily, and is the closest point on Sicily to mainland Italy. It is easily accessible from Reggio di Calabria or Villa San Giovanni on the mainland. Messina is a modern city with few intact monuments due to an earthquake in 1908 and Allie bombings in 1943. It is gateway to nearby Taormina, Mt Etna and ancient Naxos.

Day 3: Valletta, Malta

Valletta and its suburb town of Floriana are perched on the steep Sciberras peninsula jutting out into Malta's two deep natural harbours, Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Valletta is the Islands' fortress city. Founded by the Knights of St John in 1566, it is known as the 'city built by gentlemen for gentlemen' ; a 16th century architectural masterpiece. Valletta is very much a working, capital city; a bustling cultural centre and the administrative and commercial heart of the Islands. Walking around Valletta, you'll come across an amazing number of historical sites, squares, courtyards, gardens and any number of cafés to visit. The city is a delight to shop in: narrow side streets are full of tiny shops selling antiques, maps, books, prints and jewellery.

Day 5: Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia. It is located on the shores of the Mediterranean and enjoys a mild climate all year round.Barcelona is one of Europe’s largest and most successful ports and one of the world’s leading cities in art and architecture. From the modern cruise terminal at the docks you will need a taxi or tour to see the artistic beauty of this unique destination, credited to the talents of Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Antonio Gaudi, Jose Clara and others. Stroll the mosaic-paved Ramblas, the city's social hub, with open-air cafes, street entertainers and flower displays. See its unique Catalonian cultural heritage in the ancient Gothic Quarter, the surrealistic architecture of Antonio Gaudi and some outstanding museums. Sights of interest include the Columbus Monument, the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia (1298 to 1454), the Maritime Museum, Picasso Gallery, La Sagrada Familia (Gaudi's unfinished cathedral), Palau Guell (Gaudi mansion) and the Olympic stadiums.

Day 6: Marseille (Provence), France

Marseille is the second-largest city of France and forms the third-largest metropolitan area, (Paris and Lyon are larger). Located on the Mediterranean Sea, it is France's largest commercial port and the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur région, The Old Port or Vieux-Port is the main harbour and marina of the city. It is guarded by two massive forts (Fort St Nicolas and Fort Saint Jean) and is one the main places to eat in the city. Dozens of cafés line the waterfront. The Quai des Belges at the end of the harbour is the site of the daily fish market.

Day 7: Genoa (Portofino), Italy

Portofino (Ligurian: Portofin) is a small Italian fishing village, comune and tourist resort located in the province of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town crowded round its small harbour is considered to be among the most beautiful Mediterranean ports. A stroll through the shady streets and sun-splashed quays of this tiny village on the Italian Riviera, will reveal the pastel houses, designer shops and charming sidewalk cafés which attract the chic elite. Day 8: Naples (Pompeii), Italy

Naples sits within the Bay of Naples in south eastern Italy and is the capital of Campagnia. It has a rich history for art culture and food – so much so that the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. At one end of the Bay sits Vesuvius dominating the southern skyline of the city. The city has some of the most important museums in Italy including the National Archaeological Museum and the Museo di Capodimonte. The latter is also a very important art gallery featuring major works by some of Italy’s finest artists. There are also a host of churches with the most famous being the Cathedral of Naples. In the bay itself you can visit the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida and of course the famous ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum are a must to see.
