Frankfurt

Frankfurt holds the distinction for being Germany’s financial and transport centre, and is today the largest financial centre in continental Europe, being the base for the European Central Bank. Head to the top of the 198m-high Main Tower for panoramic views of Frankfurt’s skyline, wander into the city’s Old Town and have a traditional apfelwein at one of the old apple cider taverns dotting the area’s cobblestone streets, or shop up a storm at the bustling pedestrianised shopping district called Zeil.
The Römerberg (Roman Mountain) lies at the heart of Frankfurt and visitors will see the City Hall dating back to the early 15th century. Flanked by half-timbered houses, this square used to be the site of Frankfurt's first trade fairs in the 13th century and is today home to the city’s annual Christmas market.
