Thailand’s largest island and connected to the mainland by two bridges, Phuket has a reputation for being a bit of a party island. This is in no small part to the island’s rather overcrowded shopping and nightlife capital, Patong Beach. But there’s certainly more to Phuket than partying. The island is a hub for beach resorts ranging from budget to luxury, quiet to vibey.
From Karon and Kata beaches to Surin and Bang Tao, there’s plenty of variety from which to choose. Phuket is the ideal base from which to explore the surrounding islands and there are a range of excursions on offer including a visit to the Phi Phi islands, famed for being the site where The Beach was filmed and Ao Phang Nga National Park’s James Bond Island named so after being featured in a James Bond movie. Highly recommended is a sea canoe trip where a local guide will take you through caves and along dramatic coastlines.
