Sitka

The Alaskan city of Sitka, formerly known as New Archangel, is one of southeast Alaska’s most beautiful cities.
Nestled on the west side of Baranof Island and flanked to the east by majestic snow-capped mountains, Sitka was the site where the Russian flag was lowered and the US flag raised after Alaska was bought by the Americans; a ceremony that is reenacted annually on October 18, Alaska Day. The Russian heritage of this city will immediately be clear to you upon visiting Sitka with such attractions as St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Russian Bishop’s House.
