Travel to Dubai

Of course, no trip to Dubai would be complete without a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. And let's not forget the Palm Jumeirah, the first and most famous of the Palm Islands. Designed in the shape of a palm tree with a central trunk and fronds, it's one of the largest artificial islands in the world and is visible from space.

When it comes to accommodation, there is no shortage of options in Dubai. Whether you're looking for a luxurious hotel or a more budget-friendly option, you'll find something to suit every budget with a Pentravel Dubai package.

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. However, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time of year, so be sure to book your accommodation and flights well in advance.

Here are some of the best things to do in Dubai:

  • Visit the Burj Khalifa: At 828 metres tall, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. Take a trip to the top for panoramic views of the city, or simply admire its impressive architecture from below.
  • Shop till you drop: Dubai is a shopper's paradise, with its countless malls and markets. From high-end designer stores to traditional souks, you'll be spoilt for choice.
  • Go on a desert safari: A must-do activity when in Dubai, a desert safari will take you on an exciting 4×4 ride through the dunes, followed by a traditional Arabian meal and entertainment.
  • Visit the Dubai Museum: For an insight into the city's rich culture and history, head to the Dubai Museum. Located in the Al Fahidi Fort, it's one of the oldest buildings in Dubai.
  • Take a ride on the Dubai Ferry: For a different perspective of the city, jump on a ferry and enjoy views of the skyline as you cruise along the Dubai Creek.
  • Enjoy a meal at a traditional Arabic restaurant: Sample some of the best Arabian cuisine at one of Dubai's many traditional restaurants. From mouth-watering kebabs to flavourful spices, there's plenty to choose from.
  • Cultural Insights: Dubai is a melting pot of cultures, making it essential to respect local customs and traditions. When visiting, it's advisable to dress modestly, particularly when entering religious sites or public spaces. In addition, during the holy month of Ramadan, it's crucial to be aware of the strict fasting rules observed by locals. These often extend to eating in public, even for visitors.
  • Social Etiquette: Dubai is known for its warm hospitality, but understanding local etiquette is essential. Always greet with your right hand, as the left hand is traditionally considered impolite. Public displays of affection should be minimal, and it's best to avoid drinking alcohol in public spaces, except in designated areas.
  • Language: While Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken and understood, making it convenient for international travellers. Learning a few basic Arabic phrases can enhance your experience and show respect for the local culture.
  • Transportation: Dubai has a well-developed public transportation system, including the Dubai Metro and extensive bus networks. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available.
  • Health and Safety: Dubai is known for its excellent healthcare facilities. Travellers should have comprehensive travel insurance and be aware of emergency contact numbers.
  • Wi-Fi and Internet: Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels and public areas, ensuring you can stay connected while exploring the city.
  • Visa Requirements: South African citizens, as well as visitors from many other countries, can obtain a visa on arrival or benefit from visa-free access for a specified duration. However, these rules may change, so it's essential to check the latest visa requirements before your trip.
  • Plug Types: Dubai uses the British-style Type G electrical plug with three rectangular prongs. Be sure to carry the appropriate adapters or converters to power your electronic devices.
  • Currency: The official currency is the UAE Dirham (AED). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's advisable to carry some cash for small purchases and in case you visit places where cards are not accepted.
  • Currency Exchange: Currency exchange is widely available in Dubai, and you can find exchange offices at airports, hotels, and throughout the city. It's recommended to exchange some currency upon arrival for convenience.
  • Tipping: Tipping is appreciated, but not mandatory. In restaurants, it's customary to leave around 10% of the bill as a tip.
  • Emergency Services: In case of emergencies, dial 999 for police, 998 for an ambulance, and 997 for the fire department. Dubai's emergency services are responsive and efficient.
  • Local Laws: Dubai has strict laws and regulations. Possession of illegal drugs, public intoxication, and public displays of affection can lead to legal consequences. Always familiarize yourself with local laws to avoid any misunderstandings.
  • Weather: Dubai experiences a desert climate with scorching summers and milder winters. The best time to visit is between November and March, when the weather is more comfortable, making outdoor activities and sightseeing more enjoyable.
  • Time Zone: Dubai operates on Gulf Standard Time (GST), which is UTC+4 — this is two hours ahead of South Africa
