From Mzansi to Milan: How South Africans Can Score a Schengen Visa

05 May 2025

Dreaming of sipping espresso in Rome, exploring art museums in Paris, or skiing in the Alps? For many South Africans, Europe is at the top of the travel bucket list – but before you can start planning that epic getaway, there’s one small but mighty document you need to tackle first: the Schengen visa.

If the word “visa” makes you break into a cold sweat, don’t worry – we’ve got your back. Here’s your ultimate guide to the Schengen visa, designed to turn that Euro trip from dream to reality.

What is a Schengen Visa and Why Do You Need It?

Let’s start with the basics. A Schengen visa gives you access to 29 European countries known as the Schengen Area – think France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and more – without border checks between them. That means you can country-hop through Europe without needing to have multiple visas for each of them – just one will do!

How to Get a Schengen Visa from South Africa

Alright, let’s get practical. If you’re in South Africa and wondering how to get a Schengen visa, here’s the lowdown:

  • Decide which country you’re applying through: You apply through the country where you’ll spend the most time OR the country of first entry if your time is split evenly.
  • Gather your documents (more on that below).
  • Book an appointment with a visa processing centre.
  • Show up for your appointment, hand over your documents, pay the fee, and cross your fingers!

Different Types of Schengen Visas

Not all Schengen visas are created equal. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Short-Stay Visa (Type C): Perfect for holidays, business trips, or family visits. Valid for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.
  • Multiple Entry Visa: Ideal if you plan to leave and re-enter the Schengen area multiple times. Validity can range from 6 months to 5 years, depending on your travel history.
  • Airport Transit Visa: For those simply passing through the international zone of a Schengen airport.
  • Long-Stay Visa (Type D): For study, work, or staying longer than 90 days.

What Are the Documents Required for a Schengen Visa?

Here’s your must-have checklist for the Schengen visa application:

  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen Area)
  • Completed application form
  • Two recent passport photos
  • Proof of travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage for medical emergencies)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or a letter from your host)
  • Flight reservation: Most Schengen countries do not require a paid-for air ticket. An itinerary will suffice as long as all the paperwork includes the name of the applicant/s with dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from Schengen state. Note that Italy does however require paid-for air tickets and does not allow itineraries only (for tickets and accommodation) so be sure to book and confirm these.
  • Proof of funds: bank statements, payslips.
  • Proof of ties to South Africa: employment letter, property ownership, school enrolment.

What is the Price of a Schengen Visa in South Africa?

The current Schengen tourist visa fee is from R1,700 for adults. Kids between 6–12 years pay R850, and kids under 6? Free!

Keep in mind, visa processing centres usually charge added fees such as service or processing fees.

Tips for Applying Like a Pro

  • Start early: Book your visa appointment in advance. We recommend applying at least 12 weeks before your trip. The last thing you want is to get caught in delays or backlogs – especially during peak holiday season – European summer and festive December holidays.
  • Be accurate: Double-check your application – errors can lead to delays or rejection.
  • Get help if needed: Struggling with the process? Chat with us when making your European holiday booking.
  • Include everything: Missing documents = guaranteed delays.
  • Arrive on time for the appointment and be well presented & organised. Holidays are fun but applying for a visa is serious business.

Which is the Easiest Way to Get Schengen Visa?

Honestly, there’s no magic trick – but some countries are known for smoother processes. For first-timers, France, Spain, or Italy tend to be easier to apply through, especially if you’ve booked Europe travel packages that include all the supporting documents.

What If My Visa Was Denied?

Cue the sad violin music – but don’t worry, it’s not the end of the road. If your visa is denied:

  • Common reasons include insufficient funds or missing documents.
  • You can appeal the decision OR
  • Fix the issue and reapply (often the quicker route).
  • Pro tip: Keep calm and get some expert Schengen visa help if needed.

Why Consider a Multiple Entry Visa?

If you’re planning more than one trip to Europe – or want to pop into the like of the UK or Ireland between Schengen countries – a multiple entry visa can save you time and hassle. Some travellers even score a 1-year or 5-year multiple entry visa if they have a solid travel history, so it’s worth asking!

Good to know: if you are planning on hopping in and out of the Schengen area i.e., if you’re planning a visit to the UK, then an additional visa is needed.

Wrapping It Up: Make Europe More Than Just a Dream

Getting your Schengen visa sorted is step one in making your European adventure happen. Whether you’re craving pasta in Italy, chasing the Northern Lights in Finland, or wandering the streets of Prague, knowing how to apply for a Schengen visa from South Africa puts you in control.
