Give Dad a Break (and a Braai): Top Self-Catering Getaways

09 June 2025

So, it’s almost Father’s Day (yip, it’s on 15 June in South Africa) … and you’re stuck wondering what to get the man who already has three “Best Dad Ever” mugs, an impressive sock collection, and enough golf tees to open a mini driving range. Don’t worry – we’ve got you.

This year, ditch the usual gifts and give Dad (or the guy who’s like a dad to you) what he really wants: a weekend getaway with a braai. Because let’s face it – if your dad isn’t flipping a tjoppie and commenting on how “the coals aren’t quite ready yet,” is it even a real celebration?

We’ve rounded up the best self-catering stays in South Africa for a braai-filled Father’s Day escape. Think local getaways, amazing views, and spots where the tongs are practically part of the welcome pack.

1. Africamps, Western Cape

If your dad loves the outdoors but also appreciates a comfy bed and hot shower, AfriCamps is a no-brainer. Their boutique glamping tents are dotted all over South Africa – from the Western Cape to the Drakensberg, the Garden Route, and even Limpopo. Each tent comes with a private deck and built-in braai area, making it ideal for a relaxed, fire-side weekend.

Pro Tip: Book a stay at one of their Western Cape spots like Stanford or Robertson for a perfect self-catering stay in the Western Cape – braai, sip local wine, repeat.

2. Gonana Guesthouse – Paternoster, Western Cape

Just a few steps from the beach, Gonana’s eco-conscious cottages are ideal if your dad appreciates the little details (like solar power and recycled décor) along with his wors roll. It’s a laid-back, cosy vibe with the sea right there – and yes, there’s a braai.

FYI: Beach braais aren’t always legal – check local rules before lighting a fire on the sand. Best to stick to your cottage’s built-in braai.

3. Alpine Heath Resort – Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

Let’s take it up a few metres – literally. This gem in the ‘Berg is perfect for the dad who’s all about mountain views and outdoor adventures. The spacious chalets come fully equipped, including their own braai areas (obviously).

Looking for Drakensberg accommodation that’s self-catering and family-friendly? This is it. Hike in the morning, light the fire in the afternoon, and toast marshmallows under the stars.

Pro Tip: Pack Dad’s favourite braai spices – there’s something about food cooked at high altitude that makes the flavours pop.

4. Kruger Gate Hotel – Right on the Edge of the Park

Braai and the Big Five? Count us in. Kruger Gate Hotel offers the best of both worlds: bush break vibes and serious braai setups. The self-catering units mean you can whip up a proper skottle breakfast or fire-grilled supper after a game drive.

FYI: Keep an eye on your snacks – vervet monkeys are very bold and know a braai when they smell one.

5. Elandsberg Cottages – Tankwa Karoo National Park

This one’s for the dad who likes it remote. And by remote, we mean no phone signal, just the sound of the wind, the crackle of the fire, and you asking, “Did I just see a gemsbok?” The Tankwa Karoo’s dramatic desert vibe is made for laid-back days and braai-heavy evenings.

Pro Tip: Bring everything you’ll need – this is a stock-up-before-you-go kind of destination.

6. Mabalingwe Nature Reserve – Limpopo

Wildlife? Check. Braai facilities? Check. That real bush weekend away feeling? Double check. Mabalingwe offers self-catering accommodation surrounded by nature but still super comfy.

Watch zebras stroll past your deck while the fire gets going. It’s the kind of trip that makes you forget what a traffic light looks like.

FYI: The reserve has resident wildlife that roam freely – so enjoy the braai, but maybe don’t leave the chops unattended.

So… Where Can I Go for a Weekend Away in South Africa?

All of these spots are great picks! Whether you’re looking for self-catering accommodation in the Western Cape, West Coast escapes, Drakensberg chalets, or something totally off the grid, South Africa’s got braai-perfect getaways in every province.

And to answer the big question:

Is it Legal to Braai on the Beach?

Not always. In most coastal areas, open fires are restricted on public beaches. Your best bet is to stick to designated braai areas or private properties like the ones mentioned above. Better safe than sorry (or fined).
