At Pentravel, we heart Maldives. With its Crusoe-chic resort islandslimpid blue lagoons and radiant coral reefs, what’s not to love? Maldives is the kind of dreamy destination that needs to be seen to be believed, which is why we were so excited to catch up with Pen expert, Landi Burger, to get the deets on her recent trip to paradise.

First impressions

Landi describes the Maldives as magical, exotic, and gorgeous. “It’s even more beautiful than any photos I have seen!” She adds: “Just as beautiful as the islands they call home, Maldivians are warm and welcoming people, and always smiling.”

Accommodation

Landi stayed in Adaaran Select MeedhupparuAdaaran Prestige Vadooand Adaaran Hudhuranfuhi

“The location of my beach villa at Meedhupparu was great, and my beachfront room at Hudhuranfuhi was lovely, but overall I preferred Adaaran Prestige Vadoo,” says Landi. “It’s an all-water villa resort, so it has the best rooms – my king room had a window to the ocean underneath! Plus, I had an outside plunge pool and semiinside jacuzzi, and don’t forget the espresso machine.

Things to do

The islands of Maldives are known for their warm waters, high visibility and diverse marine life, making this one of the best snorkelling and diving destinations out there. Landi agrees: “It’s the best snorkelling I’ve seen. Look out for the reef sharks and stingrays!”

While most of the activities at your resort will be water-related (you can even skip the excursions and snorkel from the beach – if you bring your own gear), Landi made an unplanned visit to the local village. While clean, there wasn’t much to see or do. “I’d recommend you focus on doing what’s available at your resort, be it diving, fishing, or kayaking. Maldives is definitely a beach-focused destination.”

What to eat

“On the menu… lots of seafood!” she says. But if, like Landi, you don’t eat seafood, you still have options. “There’s something for everyone – even fussy eaters like me. Freshly baked goods are on offer each morning and they bring in steaks from Australia.

Good to know

When it comes to her top Maldives travel tip, Landi says: “If you’re taking a seaplane transfer, make sure you pack an overnight bag with essentials. This is because there might not be enough space on the seaplane and your main luggage will only be delivered after the next available flight.” She adds that heels are a no-no for speedboat or seaplane transfers. “Stick to flats or flip-flops.”
