Our very own fabulous Siobhan Beyers recently visited Africamps at White Elephant Safaris, Pongola Game Reserve in KwaZulu Natal for her birthday and was brimming with excitement to share her experiences. With many South Africans looking for a unique, socially distanced holiday after a challenging year, Africamps offers a special nature-based glamping adventure at destinations all around the country.
Here’s Siobhan’s feedback.
My husband, 2-year old and I spent four amazing evenings at Africamps at White Elephant Safaris.
The Africamps experience is truly far-reaching, with various camps all across South Africa. It offers the best of both worlds, as even though it is a self-catering experience, it has an upmarket feel with all the bells and whistles! With our rushed lifestyles and lockdown year, Africamps is a great getaway where you can connect with family, friends and nature.
While all camps and surroundings are different, my experience at White Elephant at Pongola was pure relaxation, exactly what the doctor ordered! The camp is located inside a private game reserve, which means it’s not uncommon to spot antelope and warthog roaming around your tent, which also kept the kids entertained!
The tents are positioned to enjoy both morning sunrises over Jozini Lake, with a hot cup of coffee in hand, and evening sunsets!
Your day can be jam-packed with activities or as relaxing as you like Some of the experiences on offer include bush walks, game drives, Jozini Lake cruises, elephant encounters, rhino monitoring and fishing. We enjoyed the River Safari, which started just after sunrise at 7am.
While one would think all tented camps are the same, Africamps is unique! Each tent has their own kitchenette with a dining area, sitting area and indoor fireplace. There are two bedrooms for extra privacy, which can accommodate a family of 5 or group of friends. Rooms are equipped with electric blankets, air-conditioning and an interleading shared bathroom.
The absolute cherry on top: our own woodfired hot tub which can be heated on chilly days or used as is should one want to cool off on a hot summer’s day.
Even thought all Africamps are in different surroundings, once you’ve had the privilege to spend some time at one, you will know what to expect when planning your next trip, as all camps have the same quality, décor and feel.
The tents also have their own honesty bar with the essentials (water, cold drinks, ice, chips, doom, wine and wood) and Africamps also offer ‘Cook Your Own’ breakfast and South African Braai baskets too. (make sure to pre-order).
This is a tough one! Being based in Gauteng and due to distance, my next visit would probably be Gowan Valley which is in the Midlands. Next time I’m in the Western Cape, top of the list will be a visit to Oakhurst Farm in Wilderness.
