Stockholm

Often thought of as the capital of Scandinavia, Stockholm dates as far back as 1252 and comprises an archipelago of some 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges on Lake Mälaren, that flows into the brackish Baltic Sea. Two thirds of the city comprises waterways and green spaces, earning it the distinction of being called Europe’s first Green Capital.
Visitors will most head for the historical centre called Gamla Stan, with its winding medieval alleyways, colourful 16th century buildings, ancient churches and small squares. The city’s most prominent landmarks include the Stadshuset (City Hall), Kungliga Slottet, home of the Swedish monarchy and one of the only European palaces permanently open to the public.
